Gremlins Return After 37 Years | And We’re More Hyped Than a Mogwai at Midnight
The Hollywood Reporter just dropped an early Christmas present on all of us… Warner Bros. is officially reviving the Gremlins franchise
And not in some half hearted, “let’s test the waters” reboot.
No. This is the real deal, with the heavy hitters returning to make sure it’s done right.
During Warner Bros. Discovery’s third quarter earnings call, David Zaslav himself confirmed it that a brand-new Gremlins movie has been greenlit, hitting theaters November 19, 2027. And get this… Steven Spielberg is back as executive producer through Amblin Entertainment.
Not only that but Chris Columbus, the writer of the 1984 classic, is returning to produce AND direct.
That alone tells you everything… they’re going for authenticity, legacy, and that perfect blend of cozy chaos the original nailed.
And look, let me make this personal for a second…
Gremlins wasn’t just a movie for me growing up, it became a tradition.
This thing practically carved its name into my Christmas season as I grew up.
Every year, somewhere between the holiday lights, hot chocolate, and the yearly Star Wars and Elf rewatch, Gremlins has been a staple.
It’s nostalgic, it’s weird, it’s chaotic, and it’s perfect. So hearing that the OG creative forces are returning? That’s the kind of news that hits me right in the Christmas spirit core.
For anyone who somehow missed the original… first, shame on you!.. But, it was a dark, mischievous horror comedy directed by Joe Dante about a suburban family that adopts a Mogwai… the adorable fluffball who comes with three simple rules that absolutely no one should break.
Naturally, the rules are broken and chaos ensues.
Because of that, box office magic happens. $11 million budget, $151 million domestic haul. Instant icon.
Then came Gremlins 2: The New Batch, a movie so wild it practically roasted the original film from the inside out.
It didn’t land financially back in 1990, but over the decades it’s become a certified cult gem.
Warner Bros. and Amblin already tested audience appetite with Secrets of the Mogwai on Max, and with two seasons under its belt, clearly the Mogwai magic still hits.
Now, after 37 years, the Gremlins are returning to the big screen with the original creative DNA fully intact.
As someone who grew up loving this franchise, and who still watches it every single Christmas, this announcement feels like the perfect blend of nostalgia and fresh cinematic energy.
If they stick the landing, we might be looking at one of the biggest and most exciting legacy revivals in years.
And I am so ready for it.
