The SnyderVerse | and Why Comics Might Be the Smartest Path Forward

The internet is once again doing a thing.

A recent Screen Rant article reignited the conversation around whether the SnyderVerse could ever return, however this time, not as a live action or animation continuation, but in comic book form.

Predictably, reactions ranged from cautious optimism to outright hostility.

Some fans frame the idea as a betrayal of Snyder’s “true” vision. Others dismissed it as a fan attack disguised as journalism.

But here there is some fire to go with that smoke Screen Rant was blowing.

See, the idea of finishing the SnyderVerse through comics isn’t new, isn’t radical, and most importantly… it doesn’t violate Zack Snyder’s artistic intent. In fact, it aligns perfectly with things Snyder himself has said for years.

This isn’t about declaring anything “happening.” It’s about acknowledging what’s possible and what might actually make sense for everyone involved… Including you the fans.

So, let’s first address the emotional core of this debate head on.

The idea that completing the SnyderVerse outside of live action would somehow “betray” Snyder’s vision is not something Snyder has ever said.

This is actually a narrative that has been built by fans simply projecting their own expectations onto him. But there is no truth to it at all. because the fact of the matter is.

Zack Snyder was never contractually promised the completion of his DC film arc.

It may be hard to believe but Justice League Parts 2 and 3 weren’t guaranteed. They were planned, discussed, and outlined sure. But they were never fully greenlit. Snyder himself has acknowledged this. Treating those films as some sacred obligation DC failed to honor misunderstands how studio filmmaking actually works.

More importantly, Snyder has never defined his artistic vision as being limited to live action.

which is where where the argument collapses.

Now, long before DC Studios rebooted, long before James Gunn took the reins, Snyder openly discussed exploring different avenues of continuing his vision, specifically in non‑live‑action ways.

AFSP EVENT

Way back in December 2020 while talking with TheFilmJunkee during the AFSP Charity Stream Snyder revealed that he and DC Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee had actively discussed continuing the story as a comic.

“Jim [Lee] and I talked about it quite a bit… we talked a lot about maybe doing a book, or a comic book down the road to kind of finish this. We haven’t locked anything yet.”

Snyder didn’t speak hypothetically. He spoke specifically.

“Inside of that story, we would also do the backstory of Joker killing Robin… Because the Joker is somehow involved in the stealing of the Mother Box and using it to create the treadmill.”

Interesting to think on how that’s actually not compromising his vision at all. That’s expansion.

Then in early 2021, Snyder confirmed he had already pitched a comic book tie in to DC. Specifically a limited series centered on Robin’s death.

“We talked about doing a [comic book tie‑in]. DC, they decided not to do it.”

The idea?

“I wanted to do a sort of a mini kind of comic book run on the death of Robin… how Joker killed Robin, and what it did to Batman.”

Again, this wasn’t about replacing films. It was about deepening the mythology using a medium uniquely suited for that kind of storytelling. Highlighting specifically his interest and willingness to go this direction with the story.

But what might be the most important statement actually came after the SnyderVerse was effectively over.

FULL CIRCLE

During The Nerd Queens podcast in March 2023… while promoting his Full Circle charity event. Snyder was asked directly about finishing the story in comics.

His response was unambiguous

“I would really enjoy that if it was a possibility.”

He went further, acknowledging that it had once been close to happening

“There was a time when we were gonna do that, and then there was a sort of change of desire, I guess.”

The implication is clear. This wasn’t killed by artistic stubbornness. It was derailed by corporate shifts.

And yet Snyder closed the door on nothing

“These DC characters are dear to me. So who knows?”

It was then during the Full Circle Event in 2023 that he was asked point blank about completing his vision in any form. and his response was thus.

“…yes, would I be interested in whatever medium or whatever way these ideas would be made, OF COURSE I WOULD! Yeah…” — in response to a question about continuing his DC story world beyond Warner Bros. Discover

That’s not resentment. That’s openness.

See, a comic continuation allows Snyder to finish his story without asking the studio to gamble its future on the past. That isn’t disrespect. That’s balance.

And it preserves something very, very crucial that everyone loves to yell and scream about.

Snyder’s creative control over the narrative itself.

The beauty of all this is how this is where the long game comes into focus. Because DC adapts comics into animation constantly. Faithfully. And often brilliantly.

If a SnyderVerse comic series were well received, it wouldn’t compete with the DCU because it would exist alongside it, much like Elseworlds already do.

A successful comic arc could naturally evolve into Animated films, Limited animated series or even Standalone Elseworld adaptations.

That path is far more realistic than live action sequels and it doesn’t erase Snyder’s vision in the process.

We have to look at this in a way of not demanding anything as much as it is about recognizing that Zack Snyder himself has repeatedly expressed interest in finishing the story through comics. And because of that it would not betray his artistic vision.

If anything, it honors it… Any respectful fan of his would realize this.

I guess the irony is hard to miss. The loudest objections often come not from Snyder, but from fans projecting what they think he should want.

Snyder has been clear.

He’s open to the idea.

The door isn’t locked.

And maybe… just maybe the smartest way forward isn’t through the silver screen, but through the very medium that inspired these characters in the first place.
