James Gunn’s New “Super-Family” Movie Might Be Bigger Than You Think

Well, well, well… guess who just dropped a little bombshell? WBD CEO David Zaslav casually mentioned that James Gunn is working on a new movie in the “Super-Family.” And while most of the internet either glossed over it or jumped to wild conclusions, this might actually be a huge deal for the future of the DCU.

Let’s unpack it.

What Did Zaslav Actually Say?

In the middle of Zaslav celebrating WBD’s (gasp) actual success over the past year (cope harder, haters), he threw out that James Gunn is developing a new Super Family project. Naturally, people freaked out assuming it’s some combo of Superman, Supergirl, and a deep dive into Kryptonian lore.

And hey, that could be part of it… but let’s slow our roll.

James Gunn will write and direct “the next installment in the Super-Family,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed during the company’s earnings call - VARIETY

What Is This “Super-Family” Film Really?

Here’s what makes the most sense to me.

Gunn has already said he’s deep into writing another project that’s tied to Superman (2025)… but it’s not a direct sequel. He’s also confirmed that Superman plays a big role in it.

So no, it’s not Superman 2, but it sure as hell sounds like a continuation of the story.

Now, a few months back, I heard from someone (with a pretty solid track record) that DC Studios was discussing a new structural approach for the DCU.

A “pocket universe” style setup. Think of it like this:

  • A Superman Family pocket

  • A Bat-Family pocket

  • A Green Lantern corner

  • Etc.

Each with its own tone, style, and internal continuity… but with room for crossover events when needed.

In other words, Focused storytelling that doesn’t sacrifice the shared universe entirely. This Super Family film could be the blueprint for that model.

So What’s the Bigger Play?

It’s simple really. Superman is the center of this universe. Not Batman. Not Harley Quinn. Not whatever weird pet project someone’s pitching on X.

Superman.

This second film… whatever it’s going to be called… could be the launchpad for fleshing out his corner of the DCU.

Maybe we get more of Kara (Supergirl). Maybe we meet Steel. Hell, even the Authority could still be in play. You know what? Krypto might show up if Gunn feels like getting pulling the young audience in again.

The point is… This isn’t just a movie it’s going to be the infrastructure for the whole DCU

Will Gunn Direct It?

Tough call.

Gunn’s been directing what he writes lately (The Suicide Squad, Guardians Vol. 3, Superman), but don’t forget that in his early days in Hollywood he was almost strictly pen to page.

He could absolutely hand the directing gig to someone else if he finds the right fit.

But… considering this is his baby, and he’s building the foundation of the DCU brick by brick, I wouldn’t be surprised if he sticks around behind the camera too.

Finally, this isn’t just a cool side project.

It’s the next step in building a universe that TRULY puts Superman where he belongs… front and center.

And if this “Super Family” film nails it, the DCU might actually have its North Star.

We’ll be watching, James.
