A Blueprint for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
For years, Spider-Man has swung his way into the hearts of fans around the globe, and Sony’s cinematic universe featuring the friendly neighborhood hero has always had untapped potential.
As the landscape of superhero movies evolves, it might be time for Sony to rethink their approach and set a bold new course for Spider-Man’s cinematic journey.
Here’s my blueprint on how Sony should handle their Spider-Man universe moving forward.
1. Let Marvel Studios Run with Tom Holland
Tom Holland has been fantastic in the role of Spider-Man for the MCU. His charm and charisma is undeniable. However, why not let Marvel Studios continue to explore his version of the web-slinger?
Sony should consider giving Marvel the freedom to craft a handful of adventures with Tom Holland while they themselves profit from it while they create their own, Spider-Verse with their own Spider-Man.
2. Introducing a New, Older Spider-Man
Every hero’s journey is about growth and evolution. Picture a Spider-Man who is older, wiser, and more seasoned. A version who’s weathered battles with a well established rogue’s gallery.
This new incarnation could serve as both a mentor figure and a complex character in his own right, bridging the gap between legacy and innovation.
Could this mean we get a return of Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire? Or does this mean they bring in someone brand new? That’s for Sony to decide what is best, but at this point another adventure through High School and his early college years just seems a little out dated and played out.
4. The Miles Morales Tease
I hear you, I hear you. What about Miles Morales?
I say build up to him. At the end of the first film, why not drop a tantalizing hint at the future by introducing Miles Morales?
I would, however, hold off on giving him Spidey powers for a bit. This slow burn approach builds intrigue and sets the stage for an eventual, more powerful debut. It’s a narrative tease that keeps fans guessing and invested in the universe’s future.
5. Spin-Offs… But With Care
Spin-offs can either enrich a universe or dilute it. The key is balance:
Start small: Consider a spin-off focusing on a single villain’s origin, like the Green Goblin or even the Vulture.
Cameos and crossovers: Let Spider-Man make a cameo appearance to remind fans of the interconnectedness of this universe.
Strategic releases: After the second film featuring Peter Parker, a dedicated Miles Morales spin-off could further explore the expanding narrative.
And don’t stop there. A well crafted Eddie Brock film could delve into the darker side of the Spider-Man lore, offering a fresh perspective on a fan-favorite antagonist. But please don’t make them as campy and painful to watch as the last three Venom films.
6. A Unified, Long-Term Plan
To truly capture the magic of the Spider-Man universe, it’s vital to have a well structured roadmap:
Film Breakdown: Imagine a 6-8 film plan comprising 3 Peter Parker films, 2 Miles Morales films, and 2-3 additional spin-offs.
Connected Storylines: Ensure each film and spin-off isn’t isolated; every story should contribute to a larger, interconnected universe.
Living City and Lore: The backdrop of the city should feel alive, brimming with history and characters from Spider-Man’s rich lore. This detailed world-building will allow future stories to evolve naturally and seamlessly.
Sony’s Spider-Man universe holds the potential to be one of the most intricate and beloved superhero franchises on screen. By essentially rebooting the franchise and introducing a seasoned new Spider-Man all while teasing Miles Morales and carefully planning spin-offs.
Sony could create a dynamic, multi-layered universe that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
