DCU Taking Shape - Where’s the Authority?

DC

January 2023, DC Studios introduced a bold new vision for its cinematic universe, led by the creative team of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Over the last 8 Months, the DCU has started to take shape. Creature Commandos earned praise for its fresh approach, and Superman marked a meaningful win for the studio.

While It may not have soared at the international box office, it has truly resonated where it counts… and that’s a strong step forward.

At San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, James Gunn himself took the mic while talking with TikToker StrawHatGoody to update fans on what’s actively brewing in the DCU kitchen.

"We got Supergirl coming out in a year, we got Lanterns coming out, probably less than a year," the Superman helmer revealed. "We're making Clayface right now and that is, oh man, the script by Mike Flanagan is so good. Straight horror."

"We're working on The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman, The Batman 2 with Matt Reeves... Sgt. Rock," Gunn continued. "The Authority... that's... [Interview: That's not going so well?] [Laughs] The Krypto shorts. Little cartoons for kids that are really fun."

Is it a concern that projects like Swamp Thing, Waller, Paradise Lost, and a few others didn’t even get name dropped?

Honest, I am going to ease your minds and remind you that none of that means they’re scrapped, but it’s clear where the studio’s energy is going right now… especially since Gunn also called Creature Commandos Season 2 a “real big priority for us.”

Now, The Authority.

Did Gunn laugh it off?

That’s… interesting. Because when it was first announced, the pitch was all about WildStorm heavy hitters doing morally gray hero work big powers, bigger egos, no patience for red tape.

The real problem is, this idea… this concept was never going to hit the mainstream appeal. Because of that the rumor mill has started churning with whispers of…

Superman vs. The Authority being Gunn’s next big swing.

"I just really liked The Engineer's powerset and I liked taking elements of The Authority's story… she's a member of The Authority in the comics and giving those elements to Lex Luthor, to really combine the Wildstorm and DC characters in the DCU," Gunn previously said of including Angela Spica in Superman. "And I thought her powerset was good to fight Superman."

So is The Authority still going happening?

"We could for sure, it could happen. It's not something that's going especially quickly right now but it could happen, for sure."

Translation

Don’t hold your breath, but don’t count it out either. Gunn just needs to find the right way to make it all fit.
