Batman in Limbo? New Rumors Cast Doubt on Matt Reeves' Universe and Andy Muschietti's Future in the DCU

There may be trouble for the future of Matt Reeves Batman universe, as well as Andy Muschietti's future in helming the DCU's Batman Brave and the Bold. This time though, those who love to blame Gunn for everything can't point to him for this new disappointing rumor.

This is coming from Kristian Harloff from the Kristian Harloff show.

"There were executives that were talking about this, that The Batman 3 could be cancelled if SUPERMAN outperforms the Batman"

He prefaces this by saying this is discussions made by Warner Bros. Discovery executives, not DC Studios and that James Gunn and Peter Safran may not even know about these talks that they had. He continues.

"These executives are also worried about Gunn's decision to let Muscietti direct it (Brave and the Bold) because The Flash underperformed and audiences didn't respond to his tone and they are not sure he is the right choice."

Harloff reiterated that Gunn had not been in on these conversations but states "will be obviously. they will cross this bridge later depending on finished script and Gunn's opinion on it."

There is quite a bit to unpack here. first and foremost we need to remember that Gunn and Safran run DC Studios and have final say in what happens with that studio currently. The only person that they answer to is the big man David Zaslav.

While there may be executives discussing this, Unless this request comes from Zaslav, Gunn and Safran are not beholden to do it.

Next we have to really think about the relationship that Gunn has with Reeves at this point. Which by all accounts is strong. Not only have they worked well together on getting Penguin to be a huge hit, given Reeves the freedom and time to write The Batman 2, but also have announced a new project, Dynamic Duos, that they will be working on together. It is very unlikely that Gunn will tarnish his relationship with Reeves at this point.

If SUPERMAN is a success in 2025, this will give James Gunn farm more autonomy going forward as well. Making it more likely that Gunn's decision to keep Reeves happy and The Batman 3 greenlit (if it is in the cards) all more possible.

This leads us to the Muschietti part of the story. The Flash director is given a bad wrap for what occurred there. That film was not nearly as bad as many make it out to be. While the VFX may have been subpar, the overall film from story and entertainment was solid.

Let's also not forget that Muschietti gave WB two big films with the IT series.

The only reason I would be hesitant on making a statement saying Muschieti as 100% safe is because there hasn't been much talk about him since June 2023 when it was announced he was helming the project. That could be because he was working on the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry, but it is something to note as we are 16 months since that official announcement and very little has been said about him or the project since.

With all this though, Executives talk at studios. sometimes its just that, talk. Sometimes there is more to it. The question is, do you believe Kristian Harloff got accurate information or do you think its all bollocks?
